Shortly before same-sex marriage was legalized in British Columbia on July 8, 2003, Bishop Michael Ingham of the BC Anglican Diocese of New Westminster gave authority to priests in some parishes to bless same-sex unions. Arriving at that point had entailed years of soul searching on the part of his entire synod. While not everyone approved, the majority did, and the first same-sex couple to receive church rites was married on May 28, 2003.
